Chigusa Arinori (千種有敬)
Arinori CHIGUSA (October 15, 1687 - May 18, 1738) was a kugyo (court noble) who lived during the middle of the Edo period. He served the three emperors, Emperor Higashiyama (the 113th), Emperor Nakamikado (the 114th), and Emperor Sakuramachi (the 115th), and advanced to Gon Dainagon (a provisional chief councilor of state) at the rank of Junii (Junior Second Rank). His father was Noritomo IWAKURA, Gon Chunagon (provisional vice-councilor of state). His mother is unknown. His foster father was Arikore CHIGUSA, Gon Dainagon. Arisuke CHIGUSA was his adopted son (a son of Kagetada FUJINAMI, Jingi taifu - a senior assistant head of the department of shinto). The wife of Arisuke was his daughter. His initial name was Tomohiro IWAKURA, and later changed to Arisube Chigusa.
In 1691, he was conferred to a peerage. In 1692, he was adopted by his grandfather, Arikore CHIGUSA, (the father of Noritomo IWAKURA). In 1698, he celebrated his coming of age. He was awarded Jusanmi (Junior Third Rank) in 1717, becoming a kugyo, after assuming Ukone no shosho (minor captain of the right division of inner palace guards) and Sakone no shosho (minor captain of the left division of inner palace guards). After that, he assumed Sangi (councilor), Toka no sechie Geben (kugyo who supervised matters outside Jomei Gate at Toka no sechie - Imperial Court ceremonies where many persons danced while singing), Tosho-gu Hoheishi (an imperial messenger to Tosho-gu Shrine) in succession. In 1735, he was appointed to Gon Chunagon. Furthermore, he was appointed to Gon Dainagon in 1738, but resigned from the post. He died in the same year. Died at the age of 52.
He adopted Arisuke who, being a son of Kagetada FUJINAMI, had been adopted by Michinaga UMETANI, and had him inherit the line of the Chigusa family.
